Travel Recommendation: Sitges

Image
The Streets of Sitges Located 40 minutes by train southwest of Barcelona rests a vibrant small town called Sitges. Leading figures who were driving the Catalan modernism cultural were inspired by this small fishing village at the end of the 19 th century. Among the cultural figures Spanish poet, painter and playwright, Santiago Rusiñol, was one of the leaders of the movement. Santiago Rusiñol influenced Pablo Picasso as a modern artist. Picasso made 21 portraits of Santiago Rusiñol between 1899 and 1903 the majority were drawings and sketches. The history of Sitges stretches back much farther. Recently, archeologist found a Neanderthal jaw in Cova del Gegant along with tools and other skeletal remains of Neanderthals. Also, there have been remnants found from the first farmers during the Bronze Age resulting from Neolithic cultures from the Middle East. Street Markets With Live Music (Cultural Events): Monumental Club

Image
Monumental Club The Plaza de Toros Monumental de Barcelona, more commonly known as La Monumental is a fascinating bullfighting ring located in the Eixample district. Having a capacity of 19,582 this venue has been graced with concerts from the revolutionary Beatles and the legendary Rolling Stones. La Monumental was the last active bullfighting ring in Catalonia since a law was passed in 2010 banning bullfighting events in all of Catalonia. Manuel Joaquim Raspall i Mayol , strongly expressing himself through the Art Nouveau movement, designed the ring which was completed in 1914. Thousands of blue colorful tiles lay on the Moorish styled exterior. It is worth a walk by just for that! ¡Bienvenidos a Mi Blog! Hello, my name is Gabriel Treider, and I could not be more excited to be interning for the SAI Barcelona study abroad office! Every Tuesday, I will post a blog from the perspective of a 22-year-old from Colorado. Never living in a city populated over 300,000 people, I assumed Barcelona’s 1.6 million Catalonians would be overwhelming at the start of my journey. I have never been more wrong. Barcelona feels like my home because of the kindness from people that I have crossed paths with at the grocery store, on the metro, and at school. For the next three months, I will be attending Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). At UAB I will be studying economics accompanied by two international management classes. In my management classes, I will study the cultural differences here in Spain and around the world. Back home in Fort Collins, Colorado I attend Colorado State University majoring in Economics with a minor in Philosophy. I love sports, outdoor activi
